Types of Inflatable Boats: Play Boats
Play boats are those flimsy, colorful and artful small inflatable boats made of soft and unreinforced vinyl or PVC plastics. These inflatable boats are “toys” and are to be used solely for fun and play in supervised areas such as in a swimming pool, and in the shallow waters of a beach or a lake.
These play boats are in abundance in the local Kmart, or toy store and even in the shelves of grocery stores and supermarkets. There is no limit as to where you can source for a play boat especially when summer is here. Priced between to 0, these play boats can come in solid colors, with prints of favorite cartoon characters or a combination thereof. Some come with a matching inflatable tube. Some come with an inflatable hood shaped like a coconut tree or a beach umbrella. Designs are varied and more often than not, dotting parents and grandparents buy inflatable play boats so they could enjoy them too.
Though these inflatable play boats are only “toys” and should not be seriously considered as a life raft or even a dinghy, they are fun! Colorful and bright, these inflatable play boats are good enough for the kids (and adults) to enjoy as they go about their merry way in shallow water. Though there are types that come with outboard brackets, this type of inflatable boat lacks the rigidity to carry even the smallest outboard. Rowing or paddling this inflatable play boat for even a short distance could be quite frustrating too. It is best if the kids stay on the boat while mom and dad kick hard in the water for the boat to move.

Types of Inflatable Boats: River Boats
Inflatable river boats are not your run-of-the-mill inflatable boats that are a nudge better than inflatable play boats. Inflatable river boats are specialized editions of inflatable boats for use in shooting the rapids and whitewater rides. They look like large and under-inflated soft tails but its appearance is deceiving as inflatable river boats have many great features.
Made of nylon fabric because of its elasticity, river boats are designed to be inflated at a lower pressure than regular inflatable boats. Why? These two features add resilience and flexibility to the boat. The high end design of a river boat keeps it from going under the river’s big waves. The large scuppers serve to drain gallons of water that spill into the boat as it speeds through the rapids. The inflatable floor increases the boat’s buoyancy and ease in draining. It also protects the passengers from rocks, logs and other hard objects that the boat may come in contact with in its whitewater trip.
Majority of inflatable river boats are designed to meet the requirements of professional guides and outfitters who run whitewater river rides for large groups of “adventurers” of up to 12 per boat. However there are now several manufacturers, like Achilles, who are now making river boats for 3 to 4 persons. Northwest River Supplies even manufactures one-person river boats. Avon manufactures river boats good for seven persons.
A river boat is not solely used for whitewater rafting. Its inflatable floor makes it a suitable fishing platform. It will also paddle better than a soft tail. The high ends design makes this boat suitable to use even on high seas. However, even if the boat can be fitted with a motor a long-shaft outboard is needed because of the high ends.
These are great boats but are more expensive than regular sport boats. Price starts at 00 for a four-seater and a whopping 00 for the bigger models.

Inflatable Boats Materials: Polyvinyl Chloride
PVC is a form of plastic that is used in more than ways than one. It is used as water conduits, electrical wire covering, kitchen flooring and more. In recent year s the use of PVC as material for inflatable boats became popular. To make the PVC a good enough material for inflatable boats, a whole range of plasticizers and dyes were added to the formulation of drain-pipe-quality PVC to make the “sea worthy”.
In a nutshell, PVC is cheap! PVC is also easier to weld as it can be thermoelectrically welded quiet efficiently by machines. Neoprene and Hypalon boats cannot be welded. They have to be glued manually by very skilled workers. This is one reason why PVC is cheaper than neoprene and Hypalon. However, PVC is very photodegradable. Leave it in the hot tropical sun and the PVC will break down quickly. PVC inflatable boat manufacturers claim that they coat their PVC boats with special ultraviolet coatings like the ones in marine varnishes and paints. However, results are yet to be reported.
Plasticizers added to PVC to make it more pliable and flexible also destabilize the PVC itself. The consistency of PVC inflatable boats also differs per batch made. Quality is compromised because of this. The welded seams of PVC inflatables are strong but when the seam is attached to a rigid bottom or wooden transom, its strength is also compromised. Since PVC also does not glue well, repairing punctures and holes is difficult.
PVC is also prone to damage when exposed to hydrocarbon fuels and other chemicals. The boat will not melt or explode when exposed to such chemicals but it will stain and generally cause an adverse chemical reaction that will eventually shorten the life of PVC inflatable boats. Hypalon is generally able to withstand chemicals and hydrocarbons.
It seems that the only qualifying advantage of PVC inflatable boat is its cheap price. Veteran cruising sailors who traverse the waters of the Caribbean are adverse to PVC boats. These boats proved to be floating disasters in the hot Caribbean Sea. They do not last for more than two seasons.
Three surveys were independently done regarding the preferred material in inflatable boats. The World Cruising Survey, Practical Sailor Magazine and Seven Seas Cruising Association all had the same results in their surveys. A whopping 90% prefer Hypalon than PVC even of its more expensive. Hypalon boats by Avon and Achilles were the brands most favored. The surveys were conducted on full-time sailors who spend a lot of time sailing and cruising in the tropics. These sailors and cruisers spend use their Hypalon inflatable boats on an almost daily basis.
The waters and sun of the tropics are different in the temperate zone. If you intend to use your PVC inflatable boat only in the colder temperate zone for a limited time only, then that is fine. Photodegradation does not seem to be a problem that greatly affects PVC inflatable boats in the temperate zone. However, PVC boats that suffered damages due to the sun’s rays were almost always beyond the point of repair.
The lifespan of any inflatable boat depends largely on how you take care of the boat. You may own the most expensive Hypalon boat your side of town but if you don’t take care of your inflatable properly it still won’t last. Even the most expensive inflatable boat will not last long if is neglected and abused. O the other hand, even the cheapest PVC inflatable will last for years and years if taken care of properly. A boat that is properly taken care of even if used every day is good to use for 5 years. A well maintained boat that is occasionally used can last up to 20 years.
Hypalon boats have guarantees of 10 years while PVC boats usually have 5 years warrantees. Note that there are some boat companies that do not honor their warrantees.

Inflatable Boats Preventive Maintenance
Inflatable boats are tough. However, tough as they are, inflatable boats are prone to a lot of damages not normally encountered by conventional boats. It is imperative that special care should be allotted to your inflatable boat if you want it to last for more than a season or two. Here are some guidelines that you can follow.
Don’t Chafe the Boat
Abrasion is a big factor in inflatable boat maintenance, though oxidation and exposure to sun are primary factor in the degradation of inflatable boats. Be careful where you drag or dock your inflatable. Rocks, logs and hinge bolts on docks can damage your inflatable. These conditions cannot be totally eliminated so just be careful when dragging your inflatable on a pebbly beach. If you and your buddies can carry the boat, do so. If not, take care especially around coral and shells. RIBs can better tolerate the dragging along rocky beaches but care should nevertheless be observed.
Ropes, lines and metal fittings can also cause chafing. You should consider flat nylon webbing instead of rope for tying boats on trailer. Protect your boat from shackles with plastic, like coffee-can lids. This way the shackle will rub against the plastic lid and not on the boat.
Keep the inflatable Clean
Keeping an inflatable clean is not really that impossible. It can be done but you need to out in effort. With normal use (fishing, swimming, diving, snorkeling) an inflatable boat gets covered with sand and mud. These little irritants can start leaks that are hard to find so it is best to clean the floor fabric once in a while and teach all your passengers to rinse their feet from sand before going aboard the inflatable.
Do a thorough washdown on the boat at intervals. Deflate the boat and strip it of its content floorboards included. Re-inflate slightly then vacuum between seams and the floor fabric. Try to reach all those hard to reach places. Wash the boat with detergent liquid soap, water and ammonia. There are special soaps for cleaning inflatables so you might want to try them. Scrub the exterior too then flip the boat and scrub the interior.
Removing Bottom Growth
Growth can accumulate at the bottom of the boat. You have to scrub them off using a plastic scraper. Or, you can just take out the boat from the water and let it dry on the sun for a day. Wash the bottom with good old elbow grease. You can also use detergent with bleach and ammonia while you scrub the bottom with scrubbing brush.
Restoring to Original Color
Anything put under the sun’s UVB and UVA lights will fade up to a certain point and dark colored boats are no exemption. However, PVC boats are more susceptible to fading than Hypalon. If you are particular with the fading, you can opt to coat your boat with chemical restorers available in marine shops. However these chemicals contain abrasives and repeated use will be harmful to the boat’s fabric like removing the UV barrier coating from PVC boats. If you still chose to use cleaners, make sure that it does not contain silicone. Some seasoned boatmen prefer to just cover the inflatable boat with tarp to protect the boat from the sun. It has been proven effective. You can also spray on the boat 303 Protectant, a no silicone barrier, on a weekly basis to keep it shiny.
Painting Inflatable Boats
If the oxidation and fading is just too much, you might want to paint the inflatable. You can choose the same color or a new one. Aesthetics is not the only concern as a badly faded boat is bound to leak air though the fabric. Two coats of paint are normally required for a great finish. However if you change the color from dark to light, it might take 3 to 4 coats to even out the new color.
